ISC Topic 5. Top 5 Tips to Keep in Mind While Blogging

The top 5 tips for creating and keeping a well organized, aesthetically pleasing, entertaining blog are as follows.

  1. Keep up with the blog weekly. Do not wait because your blog will suffer. I had 37 blogs at the end of the semester, and I could not have imagined doing them all in the last week. It would take you forever, and I can guarantee you will not receive a good grade.
  2. Utilize all tools like prezi, scribd, and Twitter. Incorporating these into your blog make it aesthetically pleasing and easier to read.
  3. Use widgets. It makes your blog interactive.
  4. Make it consistent. When you have categories, make titles the same. For example, all of my ISC topic titles start like this. “ISC TOPIC 1.” Or 2 etc. This makes it easier to identify information on your blog page and where it pertains to.
  5. Use proper grammar rules. Writing well makes the blog seem more credible, and pleasing to read.

ISC Topic 4. My Blog Highlights Skills and Knowledge of the Field of Strategic Communication

This Blog highlights information for an integrated strategic communication class I took in the fall semester of 2010 at Queens University of Charlotte as an undergraduate. My best work includes connections to the class, labs and topics from the specific work asked from us.

My best connections include Connection 1, highlighting  the importance of digital media literacy. Connection 4 was  a reflection of Dr. Fareed Zakaria’s speech at Queens in 2010. He spoke about information technology. Connection 6 includes humor in talking about Twitter and how the world used to communicate through YouTube.

ISC Topic 2 includes the topic of privacy and freedom of speech, which allowed me to blog about freedom of speech rights in the workplace using an article about a woman who was fired for expressing her ideas and beliefs.

Labs were important to include because a lot of the information in them are real events or highlights my use of different tools. Lab 11 is a media kit for the opening of an on-campus building. Lab 10 highlights my use of Prezi. Lab 3 is a press release written for an on campus event.  Lab 1 along with all of the media labs use scribd to highlight the information and show up on my blog. All of these tools are important to the professional world and I am glad I know hot to use them to present information in the best way.

Chapters 5 and 20. PR Professionals and Management.

Chapter 5

The Public Relations is accepted as a step of the management process if a company is smart (Seitel, Page 99). PR managers need to think on their feet and be able to achieve results. The best way to do this is to have one foot inside the company and one foot outside (Seitel, Page 81).

The public relations management process should include 4 steps

1. Defining Problem or Opportunity

2. Programming

3. Action

4. Evaluation

(Seitel, Page 83).

In creating a PR plan (spells out the campaign), there are 10 items that should be incuded,

1. An Executive Summary

2. Communication Process

3. Background

4. Situation Analysis

5. Message Statement

6. Audiences

7. Key Audience Messages

8. Implementation

9. Budget

10. Monitoring and Evaluation

All of these skills are so important, and Pr professionals are one of the fastest growing career choices because the needs of companies have changed (Seitel, Page 99).

Chapter 20

“The public must be informed” – Ive Lee (100 years ago) (Seitel, Page 400). Even he knew 100 years ago that PR professionals (or whatever they would be called) are important. PR jobs use to be the first to be cut when the Country was in an economic downturn; however, companies realize how important these people are to their image and how much they portray the organizations face (Seitel, Page 400).

When going into this field, and searching for a job, you should,

-Consider what interests you and start early

-Get a name

-Dispatch a personal letter

-Call

-Prepare an elevator speech (Seitel, Page 403).

Once you have your foot in the door, there are 7 keys to being successful.

7. Intangibles (Seitel, Page 405).

Connection 7. Steve Johnson Crisis Management.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson will need a little bit of crisis management. He dropped one of the most important passes of his life yesterday against the Steelers, which would have won the game. It happens, and in his post game interview on ESPN, he took the blame for the loss and was very upset. These actions were the right ones, however, after the game he also tweeted,

After this, there will need to be some serious crisis management against religious groups and people who find this offensive. His PR work will begin by being honest about what he meant by it. We will see in the days to come how this may play out.

Chapter 19. Crisis Management.

Crisis management has become one of the most “revered skills in PR work” (Seitel, Page 290). Businesses always want to prevent crisis first, but unfortunately, when crisis happens, it will always be a surprise. You will probably find out when the media is contacting you to find out more information (Seitel, Page 387).

To prevent crisis, a company must have great “issues management”. Issues management is “the capacity to understand, mobilize, coordinate, and direct all strategic and policy planning functions, and all public affairs/public relations skills, toward achievement of one objective: meaningful participation in creation of public policy that affects personal and institutional destiny” (Seitel, Page 383).

The most important aspect of planning a crisis is BEING PREPARED. While doing this, there needs to be understanding between all parties. All definitions and risks need to be spelled out for all audiences. Rumors will then be less likely to start (Seitel, page 387).

When a crisis occurs, you need to communicate well. By well, I mean fast and accurate (Seitel, Page 391). This is one of the biggest mistakes PR professionals and companies make. They wait and let rumors start, and wait even longer while communication errors get worse. If you come out with accurate info very quickly, there will be minimal confusion (Seitel, Page 391).

As social media and the internet broaden the landscape of info and area of crisis to grow, there will be more people who need to have crisis management skills.

Lab 12. TWITTER. Stay Connected

Twitter. I thought I would never use it. I also thought I would never use Facebook. Twitter made me love it just as Facebook did. If something happens and I want to share it I find myself updating foursquare to where I am, Twitter to say what happened and link a website, or a hash tag, and my Facebook status. This time last year I was saying, “ I hate social media and I think it ruins face to face communication and limits it”. I still do think that to some degree, but I also believe that social media gives us opportunities that are beyond what we have ever had before.  Due to my blog, I have been noticed  by Queens for writing a media kit with two other people and it has shown me how being connected can benefit my career when I graduate. I want to be a sportscaster, and if I am working for ESPNU (which I would die for) I would need to be connected in many ways. If I knew what athletes were tweeting before games, I could ask them about it and bring in another tie to the interview I would have with them at halftime, or after the game. There are so many ideas and ways to connect with people in person by being connected with them in social media. This experience has changed the way I think about social media even more. I tweeted more than was asked of me, and I really liked knowing what was going on. One of my favorite tweets was about  what people were doing last Thursday night. I would have never known unless I had a Twitter. I also heard of one student not missing a JBIP  meeting because he saw someone tweeted about being at it. He must have forgotten but was reminded and made it to the meeting and did not have to pay late fees. That is being connected.
